Disabled Facilities Grants by Local Authority
A Disabled Facilities Grant (DFG) can fund up to £30,000 of home adaptations in England (£36,000 in Wales) — including stairlifts, walk-in baths, grab rails, and wheelchair ramps. Every local council administers DFGs differently. Find yours below to see waiting times, eligibility, and how to apply.
What is a Disabled Facilities Grant?
A Disabled Facilities Grant is a means-tested government grant administered by your local council. It funds essential adaptations to help disabled or elderly people live safely and independently at home. You do not need to be a homeowner — tenants can also apply.
Eligible adaptations include stairlifts, level-access showers, grab rails, wheelchair ramps, widened doorways, and specialist kitchen or bathroom equipment. The grant is mandatory — if you meet the criteria, your council must award it.
How to apply: Contact your local council housing or adult social care team, or ask an occupational therapist to refer you. Find your council below for specific guidance.
